Unique Database of Sociological Research Available Free of Charge Print E-mail

On June 24, 2008 Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) together with Promoting Active Citizen Engagement in Combating Corruption in Ukraine (ACTION) Project today presented a database of research on the state of corruption in Ukraine in several different sectors including education, healthcare, regulations, the judicial system, and others.

KIIS collected the results of research done on this subject spanning the last 10 years. This unique database will be of service to students, scholars, policy-makers, NGOs, and the media. The database is unprecedented in its access: all of its resources are now available online at the website http://www.kiis.com.ua/cordb/index.php and may be downloaded by anybody free of charge.

Volodymyr Paniotto, KIIS Director noted: ”Over the last 10 years different organizations have collected a vast amount of sociological data concerning corruption in Ukraine.  Sadly, the data is often only used by those collecting it.  As a result, new studies are often conducted without considering earlier ones. Also, different Ukrainian and international researches use different indicators and thus it is difficult to establish dynamics of corruption indicators.  These are the reasons why we initiated the creation of such a database, which will allow a wide circle of users to utilize the results of previous studies  in their work and plan new studies more assiduously.”

The database will compile the results of over 60 different studies conducted by Ukrainian and international organizations and thereby become a reliable source of information on the state of corruption in Ukraine. It brings together in one place analytical reports, powerpoint presentations, and databases in SPSS and ÎSÀ.  It is envisaged that the main users of the KIIS database will be journalists, government, international organization, think-tanks, academics, and students.

The database was created with the support of Promoting Active Citizen Engagement (ACTION) in Combating Corruption in Ukraine Project implemented by the Management Systems International with the Support of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).  The Project is a two-year activity that supports non-governmental monitoring and advocacy on priority areas in combating corruption, focusing particularly on issues identified by the Government of Ukraine in its Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Threshold Country Plan.
